There was a strange kinship I was feeling with these natives, something that I constantly felt the need to tear away from. I had to: it would do me no good to have a complete emotional investment on particularly the faces of the begging children who haunted my thoughts; emotional investment… emotional toll.

…: there were rows of illuminated balls of light hanging over us from the vaulted ceilings, as the open-air space provided a cool breeze once in awhile. It was easy to forget about the high level of humidity from where we were sitting, as others enjoyed their dinners, amidst revelers strolling by in the sweet early Manila evening.
